Building History
The metallurgical engineer Charles W. Merrill (1869-1958) married his wife, Clara Scott Robinson, on 02/09/1898 in Alameda, CA. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. California, Marriage Records from Select Counties, 1850-1941 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014, accessed 08/08/2018.) In the 1910 US Census, the Merrills were reported living at 2307 Prospect Street. This was likely the same house as 2307 Warring Street, as Warring and Prospect run parallel. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: Berkely, Alameda, California; Roll: T624_72; Page: 5A; Enumeration District: 0064; FHL microfilm: 1374085, accessed 08/08/2018.)
The US Census of 1920 indicated that Charles W. and Clara Merrill resided at 2311 Warring Street along with their four children--Beatrice Maud (born c. 1900 in CA), John Lisgar (born c. 1903 in CA), Gregor Charles (born c. 1906 in CA), and Bruce Robinson Merrill (born c. 1911 in CA). In addition, his widowed sister, Maud M. Hayward (born c. 1862 in MA) lived with the Merrills, as did a niece, Edna (born c. 1889 in CA), and two servants, Saimia M. Kauma (born 1898 in Sweden) and Marion Daniels (born c. 1894 in SD), and a cook, Wei Junj (name probably misspelled, born c. 1872 in China). (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1920; Census Place: Berkeley, Alameda, California; Roll: T625_92; Page: 310A; Enumeration District: 174, accessed 08/08/2018.) They seem to have resided here until about 1924.
He and Clara also listed a permanent address in San Francisco, CA, in 1924 of 121 2nd Street. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Biographical Files, accessed 08/08/2018.) The US Census of 1910, indicated that the Merrills lived at 2317 Prospect Street in Berkeley with two servants.
