Building History
Architect John Parkinson (1861-1935) arrived in Los Angeles from Seattle in 1894. He arrived in Southern CA with considerable experience designing about 30 schools and numerous residences in WA, and became assimilated in the Los Angeles architectural community rapidly. This wood-frame house for William Garland was designed in 1899. The Los Angeles Herald mentioned Parkinson's work on it in its issue of 03/09/1899: "John Parkinson has prepared plans for William Garland for a two-story frame residence, to be built on Howard street and Linwood avenue." (See "Among the Architects," Los Angeles Herald, vol. 26, no. 160, 03/09/1899, p. 7.) It is possible that this article mistakenly referred to "Howard Street" when it meant "Hartford Street," which does intersect Linwood Avenue. No Howard Street meets Linwood in 2018.
