Overview
This long, two-floor commercial building provided space for five storefronts on the west side of 1st Street in Portland's central business district in the early 1870s. This business block stood just to the north of the H.W. Corbett's Building at 93 1st Street. Both buildings have been demolished.
Building History
In 1873, the Fishel and Roberts Company operated its retail clothing shop and factory on the southwest corner of 1st Street and Washington Street. The business was owned by Charles Fishel and Andrew Roberts. Fishel resided on the southeast corner of Stark and 5th Streets, and Roberts lived close to the store at 3rd and Washington Streets. In addition to the Fishel and Roberts Store/Factory, Mrs. C. Levy operated a dry goods store in rooms of the 1st and Washington Block at 87 1st Street. Mrs. Levy resided at the Saint Charles Hotel in 1873. (See (See Samuel´s Directory of Portland and East Portland, 1873, p. 217.)
