5th Avenue and Taylor Street
Portland, OR

Overview

In the early 1850s, MA-born businessman Henry W. Corbett purchased a block bounded by SW Taylor Street, 5th Avenue, SW Yamhill Street. When he first came to the city, he lodged in his general store at the corner of Front and Oak Streets. In 1852, he arranged for a Greek Revival-styled residence to be brought around the Cape Horn and reassembled on this site in 1854. This house suited his needs until 1874, when he erected a more modern, three-story residence on the same block-long property. This dwelling was torn down following the death of his wife in 1936.
