The Occidental Hotel stood on the southeast corner of 1st Street and Morrison Street in 1873. Its address was approximately 50 Morrison Street in 2019.

Overview

This hotel was in operation in 1873 at 1st Avenue and Morrison Street in Portland, OR. Samuel D. Smith ran the Occidental in 1873. (See Samuel´s Directory of Portland and East Portland, 1873, p. 247.)

Building History

In 1873, Samuel D. Smith, Manager of the Occidental Hotel, indicated in advertising that he had recently "refitted and reopened" the Occidental Hotel. (See Portland, Oregon City Directory, 1873, p. xxi.)

In 1892, Samuel D. Smith owned the Occidental Hotel. H. Wagner managed the hotel at that time.

Building Notes

The Occidental Hotel had a fire in 1892 that did about $500 worth of damage. The Morning Oregonian said of the Occidental Hotel blaze: "The alarm turned in from box 12 at 10:30 o'clock last night was for a fire in the old Occidental hotel building. The fire broke out in the second story of the building, over the barbershop of F.J. Jost, on the Morrison street side. It burned down into the barbershop and there was quite a blaze when the fire department arrived, but it was soon extinguished. Jost is the heaviest loser. His loss is estimated at $500. H. Wagner, who keeps the hotel, lost about $20 in bedclothes. The building is owned by Samuel D. Smith, whose loss is about $150." (See "Last Night's Blaze," Morning Oregonian, 11/01/1892, p. 5.)

Demolition

The Occidental Hotel was razed.
