Overview

Mass emigration of Jews out of Russian and Eastern Europe occurred during the last quarter of 19th and first two decades of the 20th centuries. This immigration influx prompted the development of new synagogues throughout the US. Many Jews settled in the Downtown districts of Oakland, including those who formed Temple Beth-Jacob in 1893.

Builidng History

The cornerstone laying ceremony for the Beth-Jacob Synagogue was held on 06/02/1907. Berkeley resident, A. Merrill Bowser, served as the architect of the new Mission Revival Style building. (See Frederick Isaac,Jews of Oakland and Berkeley, [Charleston, SC: Arcadia Publishing Company, 2009), p. 25.)
