The parishoners of Saint John's Presbyterian Church purchased another parcel of land close by to erect a new fellowship hall and classrooms in 1955 and completed the buildings ten years later. A 1968 bequest enabled the building of a new sanctuary to be completed on the new 2727 College Avenue site in 1975. The building was vacated in 1974, and new uses were discussed for the church. Efforts to protect this church helped to stimulate the formation of the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association, 12/09/1974. In 1974, a first buyer tried to turn the building into a music center, although this failed after one year. In 1977, it began its life as a performing arts center, and was formally incorporated as the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts, a non-profit organization, in 1980. Renovations made in 1989 included new seats, lights, sound system, spring stage, and new access from backstage to a ballet practice room.
