Daly Street
East Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA

The East Los Angeles Congregationalist Church was located on Daly Street near Downey Avenue.

Overview

This church was in operation on Daly Street near Downey Avenue in East Los Angeles, CA, in 1892. Reverend Jenkins served as its pastor, whose residence was at 1303 Primrose Avenue. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1892, p. 62.) The church still existed in 1915, as it was listed in the Journal of the Assembly during the Forty-first Session of the Legislature of the State of California, 1915, (Sacramento: California State Printing Office, 1915) p. 564. The intersection of Daly Street and Downey Avenue no longer exists, so the church's exact location is at present unknown.

Building Notes

Apparently, the East Los Angeles Congregationalist Church had a history of problems, probably financial, by 1911. The Pacific, the journal of the Congregational Churches of the Pacific Coast, stated in its issue of 12/27/1911: "The Rev. A. W. Hare, who resigned the pastorate in Eagle Rock in October, after four years of efficient service there, is resting, studying, and preaching as opportunity offers. We quote a few lines from a recent personal letter to the editor of the Pacific; which shows improving conditions in the Congregational work in East Los Angeles. 'Went over to East Los Angeles Church a week ago yesterday to her Rev. T.J. Brown, who is doing well there. The church had to raise two hundred dollars to pay a street-paving bill and some other unlooked-for things, and Mr. Brown asked me to get the money. Had a delightful response and the money immediately. The atmosphere there is the most cordial and friendly I have experienced in a long time, and things are looking up, where for so long they have been discouraging.'" (See The Pacific, vol. LXI, no. 52, 12/27/1911, p. 9.)
