Overview
This custom house was designed for the family of Ben Hansen, who worked as a manager for the Kelly-Clark Company, a food brokerage firm in Seattle, WA.
Building History
According to Paul Hansen, son of Ben and Ruth, the family resided in this house between 1954 and 1960. The house and property cost about $60,000 to purchase and build. This land once belonged to the Pioneer Sand and Gravel Company for use as a gravel pit. It was developed into the Arroyo Beach subdivision. The Hansens commissioned the firm of Molver, Marquette and Stertzer to design their new residence. Ivan Anderson, a local builder, worked with the architects to construct the dwelling.
The house was sold to Dale Huling and his family in 1960. The house passed to Dale's son, Steven, in later years.
Building Notes
The Hansen House appeared on the cover of Sunset Magazine, c. 1956 or 1957, according to Paul Hansen. The family's next custom house in Edmonds, WA, (1968), was also featured on the cover of the same magazine, c. 1969 or 1970.
The original foundation work for the Hansen House in Arroyo Beach was laid in the wrong spot and violated tract rules about placement. It had to be removed and relaid to comply with local codes.
Alteration
The Huling Family made some additions to the residence over time.
