Building History

Capitalist Lloyd Tevis (b. 03/20/1824 in Shelbyville, KY-d. 07/24/1899 in San Francisco, CA) lived on the southeast corner of Taylor and Jackson Streets from at least 1862-1880. Tevis built wealth rapidly working as a lawyer, banker, broker, corporate investor and real estate investor in San Francisco, awash in wealth from railroad construction, the Gold Rush and Comstock Lode during the 1849-1875 period. During the 1860s, his real estate office was located at 636 Clay Street. (See The San Francisco directory for the year commencing October, 1868, p. 661.) For much of his professional career, Tevis maintained a law practice, Haggin and Tevis, (with James Ben Ali Haggin [b. 12/09/1822-d. 09/13/1914]) and a separate investment business.

From an early point, by 1869, at least, Tevis resided in a house at 1316 Taylor Street. (See San Francisco Directory, 1869, p. 598.)According to the US Census of 1870, he lived with his wife, Susan Gano Tevis (b. 02/09/1831 in KY-d. 04/29/1902 in CA) and their five children: Maggie Tevis Blanding (b. 1855 in CA-d. 1915), Henry Lloyd (known has "Harry," b. 03/27/1856 in CA, who would become a physician), Louisa Tevis Sharon (b. 10/12/1858 in San Francisco, CA-d. 12/1938 in Towcester, Northamptonshire, UK), Hugh (b. 12/15/1860 in San Francisco, CA-d. 06/05/1901 in Yokohama, Japan) and William S., Sr., (1863-1943, who became a banker and investor). They had a staff of four servants in 1870. The 1870 US Census indicated that Lloyd Tevis owned $500,000 worth of real estate and had a personal estate worth $1,000,000. These amounts did not rank with the top plutocrats of 1870 San Francisco, but were very substantial fortunes, nonetheless. Tevis, in fact, engaged in a number of business ventures with the Big Four railroad magnates and their associates, and they lived on Nob Hill, near where the cities wealthiest chose to congregate.

In 1880, the family lived at 1316 Taylor Street. Household occupants included Lloyd and his wife, and their three sons, Henry S., Hugh, and William. The Tevis family also maintained a staff of six domestic servants.
