Building History

Fast-food magnate Carl Nicholas Karcher (1917-2008) resided in this rambling Spanish Colonial Revival residence at 700 North Clementine Street in Anaheim, CA, from 1949 until just before his death in 2008. (Karcher passed away from complications due to Parkinson's Disease at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, CA.) He and his wife, Margaret Magdalen Heinz Karcher (1915-2006), raised 12 children in the dwelling. The Karchers opened their first hot-dog stand in Los Angeles in 1941, and their first hamburger stand in Anaheim in 1945. They would found the Carl's Jr. hamburger chain, which eventually purchased the East Coast-based Hardee's hamburger chain in 07/1997 to comprise part of Carl Karcher Enterprises, now known as CKE Restaurants Holdings, Incorporated. In 2018, this firm controlled more than 3,300 restaurants in 42 states and 28 foreign countries, and featured the Carl's Jr., Hardee's, Green Burrito and Red Burrito brands. The first Green Burrito store was placed inside a Carl's Jr. outlet in 1994; the first Red Burrito was located in a Hardee's in 2005. Both Mexican brands were headquartered in Franklin, TN, in 2018.

The Karchers, devout Roman Catholics, (Carl Karcher was active in the Knights of Malta), became significant philanthropists in Southern CA; according to a 1989 article in the Los Angeles Times, their business, Carl Karcher Enterprises (CKE), routinely donated "...2% of its pretax earnings to charity." (SeeJube Shiver, Jr., Los Angeles Times.com, "Business Charitable Donations Drop : Several Orange County Firms Buck Trend, Increase Giving," published, 09/01/1989, accessed 01/30/2018.)The Karchers were outspoken advocates for conservative political causes, most notably for the pro-life, anti-abortion movement.
