Overview

Designed by the Supervising Architect of the US Treasury, Oscar Wenderoth, The Dalles, OR, Main Post Office, was a small, two-floor, Georgian Revival Style building with a portico set in antis. It opened on Monday, 07/31/1916. The 63rd US Congress (3rd Session) appropriated $60,000 for its completion in 1915; up to this time, $44,000 had already been appropriated, bringing the total to $104,000. This was the first Federal Government building in The Dalles.

Building History

The US Postal Service used this facility for many years. The post office stood on three parcels of land, two occupied by the Condon and Brogan Houses, sold at a cost of $15,000 and $7,500 respectively. This site consisted of a 174-foot street frontage on 3rd Street. Construction began in 03/1915, and concluded by 07/1916. (See National Park Service, National Register of Historic Places Inventory Nomination Form, US Post Office, The Dalles, OR, published 03/04/1985

The AmeriTitle Escrow Service operated in the building c. 2018.

Building Notes

Post Offices and other Federal Government buildings of this vintage were usually very well-constructed. This building had a steel frame, with front steps and portico columns of granite, while the walls were clad in sandstone. On the interior, marble and terrazzo floors were laid in high-traffic public areas. Other interior portions were floored with Oregon fir.

In 1915, the US Congress also appropriated $140,000 for the construction of a Post Office in nearby Vancouver, WA, during the same (63rd Congress, 3rd) sesssion.
