Building History
Between 1853 and 1879, German immigrant Joseph Hartmann (born 05/08/1812 in Darmstadt, Germany-d. 03/19/1879 in CA) was the proprietor of the Eagle Brewery in San Jose. (See San Jose, California, City Directory, 1870, p. 67 and San Jose, California, City Directory, 1874, p. 69.)
Building Notes
In his will of 1879, Joseph Hartmann valued the land on which the Eagle Brewery occupied at $16,000. At the time of his death, Hartmann owned a fair amount of land in San Jose, including the Eagle Brewery parcel, a parcel near Market Street and 1st Street, and a parcel near the intersection of 1st Street and Orchard Street in San Jose. Demolition
The Eagle Brewery was torn down during the early years of Prohibition to make way for the Hotel Saint Claire.
