This was the first teacher's college that would become known as Western Washington University. The institution has been named the following: Northwest Normal School (1886-1893); New Whatcom Normal School (1893-1901); State Normal School at Whatcom (1901-1904); Washington State Normal School at Bellingham (1904-1937); Western Washington College of Education (1937-1961); Western Washington State College (1961-1977); Western Washington University (1977-present).
