Overview

This mausoleum was constructed for the lawyer/businessman David Douty Colton (1832-1878), aFinancial Director for the Central Pacific Railroad and the owner of considerable real estate and stock in various companies. He passed away prematurely at the age of 46 after being thrown from a horse. The mausoleum had rudimentary Neo-Classical styling, a simpler departure during the florid Victorian era. In its sedate Classicism, the mausoleum shared a similar stylistic direction as Colton's mansion in San Francisco, atop Nob Hill, completed in 1872-1873.
