Overview

This venerable hotel functioned between 1878 and 1940 under at least three names, before it was demolished to make room for a market.

Building History

This establishment opened as the "Occidental House" in 01/1878 with Mrs. O.H. Tufts as manager. It functioned from at least 1884 until 1898 as the "Girard House." A.C. Newman was its proprietor in 1884. After 1898, the Pfister family operated the Hotel Vendome. (See Oakland Wiki.org, "Hotel Vendome," accessed 01/15/2025.)

In 1913, the Hotel Vendome operated at 909 Washington Street in Downtown Oakland, CA. It was located nearby to other hotels including the Brunswick Hotel next door and the Hotel Rex at 823 Washington Street. (See Polk-Husted Company's Oakland, California, City Directory, 1913, p. 464.)
