Overview
The Hotel Sather was in operation in Oakland, CA, in 1913. (See Polk-Husted Company's Oakland, California, City Directory, 1913, p. 464.) It may have been one of the real estate properties owned by the banker Peder Sather (1810-1886) and his wife, Jane Krom Sather (1824-1911). The Sathers were important early donors to the University of California, Berkeley (UCB). Peder Sather served as a Trustee for the College of California, UCB's forerunner, and his wife, Jane, made several major gifts to the university, including a major $250,000 bequest announced on 11/05/1900. (See "Deeds Wealth to State University, San Francisco Call, vol. 87, no. 159, 11/06/1900, p. 11.)
The hotel continued in operation in 1941. (See Polk's Oakland (California) City Directory, 1941, p. 1082.)
