This first store owned by the Kahn Family operated at 10th Street and Broadway. In 1891, the Oakland City Directory (p. 478), listed its address as 1105-1109 Broadway.

Overview

The Oakland, California, City Directory, 1891, referred to the store as "Kahn Brothers," operated by Henry, Solomon, and Frederick Kahn. They sold dry and fancy goods, millinery, cloaks, suits, and children's and infant's wear. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1891, p. 478,) The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defined fancy goods as "items (as novelties, accessories, or notions) that are primarily ornamental or designed to appeal to taste or fancy rather than essential."
