Overview
The Oakland, California, City Directory, 1891, referred to the store as "Kahn Brothers," operated by Henry, Solomon, and Frederick Kahn. They sold dry and fancy goods, millinery, cloaks, suits, and children's and infant's wear. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1891, p. 478,) The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defined fancy goods as "items (as novelties, accessories, or notions) that are primarily ornamental or designed to appeal to taste or fancy rather than essential."
