A story in the Seattle Times in 1970 stated: "The first new mirror for heaven-watching to be delivered to mile-high Palomar Observatory in 21 years arrives July 6. At a cost of $1 million, the 60-inch mirror has been precision ground for three years at California Institute of Technology. The cost was borne by Oscar Mayer, 3rd, son of the late meat packer, and by the National Science Foundation and the National Space and Aeronautics Administration."
