Building History

Bishop Edward John O'Dea (1856-1932) laid the cornerstone for Ballard's Gothic Revival Saint Alphonsus Church #1 on 09/21/1902. The church was completed 21 years later, and was dedicated by the same bishop on 02/11/1923. The first priest for this parish was the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Gustave Achtergael, who served 42 years, from 1901 until 1943. The parish also supported a school, opened in 1907, called originally "Holy Angels Academy."

When a new church was erected c. 1961-1962, the old church became used by the Saint Alphonsus Parish School.
