Overview

This very early, wood-frame fire station occupied a central position in the Gold Rush town of Auburn, CA. The building had a tall, hipped roof with a prominent bell-tower/observation deck for fire crews. The Auburn Hook and Ladder Truck #2 used this facility, according to the sign applied to the building, founded in 1852. Fires were a constant threat to Gold Rush settlements constructed of wood-framed structures and prone to fires caused by errant matches, cigars, candles, or lanterns.

Alteration

City residents moved the landmark fire station west of its current site, in order to make room for a freeway exit ramp. Its new address was 1583 Lincoln Way.
