Overview

Erected in 1890-1891, this controversial Richardsonian Romanesque building stood adjacent to the San Bernardino City Hall of 1874. It was controversial because bond issues to raise money for its construction failed twice; the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors then decided that the facility was necessary and so ordered that a county tax be levied to pay for its construction. This caused significant consternation among some taxpayers, particularly in the area around Riverside. CA. They voted to secede from San Bernardino County soon thereafter in 1893.

Building Notes

The exterior's ashlar masonry was composed of sandstone quarried at Mentone, CA, and marble from Colton, CA. Both cities are located in San Bernardino County.

Demolition

The San Bernardino County Hall of Records was razed.
