Overview

The Dewey Elementary School first opened in 1899 at East 12 Street and 38th Avenue. Another school was built here c. 1913, designed by the City of Oakland's Architect, John J. Donovan, and another designer, Washington J. Miller. It functioned as an elementary school until 1963, when it was transformed into Oakland's initial continuation high school. A continuation high school was develped to provide students, ages 16-18, who either dropped out or were removed from other high schools, a second chance to graduate. It functioned for this purpose until 2001, when it moved to another site on 2nd Avenue close to Lake Merritt. (See Dewey High School, "The History of Dewey High School," accessed 03/26/2017.)
