Overview
This wood-frame residence was the first designed by Los Angeles architect Raphael Soriano for the concert pianist Helen Lipetz and her husband, Emanuel. The house's square footage was dominated by a rounded music room planned to accommodate a Bechstein grand piano and an extensive record collection. Soriano carefully designed the rounded music room to provide optimal acoustics for Helen Lipetz's piano playing and recitals.
Building Notes
This house for the musician Helene Lipetz was exhibited at the International Architectural Exhibition, held at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne, Paris, France, 1937. The residence won a Prix de Rome bestowed at the fair.
The Lipetz House was located across the street from the Dodie Priver House #1 at 1830 North Dillon Street, also by Raphael Soriano, completed one year later, 1937.
The building's main feature, the glazed and rounded end of the music room was a design motif found occasionally in architecture of the mid-1930s. A Streamline Moderne feature, its form resonated with contemporary train and ship design.
