Building Notes

Miguel de Pedrorena (1808-1850), aka "Miguel Telsford Pedrorena," was an aristocratic Spaniard who was educated in England. He relocated from Spain by way of Peru to San Diego in 1838. Initially, he worked as a shipping agent. In 1841, he married María Antonia Estudillo (c. 1810-1856), daughter of the prominent soldier and politician José Antonio Estudillo (1803-1852). He and Maria had four children, Maria (b. 1842), Miguel, Jr., (1844-1882), Ysabel (b. 1846), and Elena (born c. 1848). Miguel, Jr., who raised cattle, built this adobe residence in 1869, its walls covered with mud plaster and whitewashed. Ysabel Pedrorena de Altamirano occupied the house from 1871 until the 1890s. It continued to be used as a residence until 1907, when it began to serve a variety of commercial uses; the entire Old Town neighborhood is now a California State Historic Park.

Alteration

The State of California Department of Parks and Recreation renovated the house in 1996.
