Overview
Peter J. Burnett was the President of the Pacific Bank and Ford H. Rogers, its Cashier, in 1869. In 1869, it built this new, three-story office building at Pine and Sansome Streets. Before 01/01/1870, it operated from the building at 400 Montgomery Street. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1869, p. 487.) By 1887, R.H. McDonald, Sr., served as president, with his son, R.H. McDonald, Jr., as vice-president and S.G. Murphy, cashier. (See Los Angeles City Directory, 1887, p. 617.)
Building Notes
In 1888, the Pacific Bank advertised itself as the "oldest chartered commercial bank on the Pacific Coast." It had a capital of $1 million and noted how it could offer letters of credit worldwide through its network of "correspondents." In the US, these affiliated banks included the Importers' and Traders' National Bank, New York, NY, National Park Bank, New York, NY, 1st National Bank, Los Angeles, CA, State National Bank, Boston, MA, National Bank of Illinois, Chicago, IL, Penn National Bank, Philadelphia, PA, Consolidated National Bank, San Diego, Riverside Banking Company, Riverside, CA, 1st National Bank of San Bernardino, San Bernardino, CA. and the Commercial National Bank, Portland, OR. Abroad, it had relationships with the Union Bank of London, Ltd., London, UK, and Hottinguer and Company in Paris, France. R.H. McDonald was the Pacific Bank President in 1888, with Frank V. McDonald serving as Vice-President. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1888, p. 884.) Two years earlier, its Vice-President was R.H. McDonald, Jr.
