Overview

The first unit of Sacramento's all-volunteer fire-fighting force, Mutual Hook and Ladder #1, was formed on 02/05/1850.

This wood-frame building was one of the earliest of the city's volunteer firehouses, originally located at 133 J Street, and served Engine Company #2. It was moved east to a new site surrounded by I Street on the north J Street on the south, 16th Street on the west and 17th Street on the east, and used by the volunteer Fire Department's Engine Company #5 by 1857. It burned around 03/10/1857 during a foggy early morning. (See "The Capitol," Sacramento Daily Union, vol. 12, no. 1857, 03/10/1857, p. 2.)

The city formed the first professional fire department west of the Mississippi River on 03/30/1872.
