Overview
Religious organizations often provided social services in 19th century America, in the absence of governmental support of hospitals, asylums, and orphanages. Catholic charities were active in building these institutions; not wanting to use Catholic charities, however, Protestant groups founded their own places, such as this Protestant Orphan Asylum at the corner of Webster and Page Streets in San Francisco.
