Overview
This facility was in operation at Rincon Point, between Main and Spear Streets, in 1863. (See San Francisco City Directory, 1863, p. 357.) In 1865, this was one of seven hospitals operating in San Francisco. They included the San Francisco County Hospital, British Hospital, French Hospital, German Hospital, Hospital of the Sisters of Mercy, Italian Hospital, and the US Marine Hospital. Building History
The US Marine Hospital in San Francisco, CA, was founded on 03/16/1852.
In 1865, Dr. John Hastings, a surgeon, managed the facility. At this time, three patients were admitted daily, and the hospital experienced about two deaths per month. The average number of patients stood at 105.
