Overview
E. Marchand ran the Union Hotel in 1863. At this time, there were also two other hostelries in San Francisco called the "Union House," one at 32 Stewart Street and the other at 16 1st Street. (See San Francisco City Directory, 1863, p. 357.)
Building History
The Union Hotel was in operation by the 1850s, and stood on one side of the Jenny Lind Theatre on Portsmouth Square. The Jenny Lind would become, amidst some controversy, renovated into San Francisco's second City Hall in 1852-1853.
