Overview
In 1878, the Bank of Commerce in San Francisco stood at 421 California Street in a dense concentration of foreign and domestic banks. In that year, the Hong-Kong-Shanghai Bank was at 415 Calfornia, the London and San Francisco Bank and the Anglo-American Bank operated across the street at 424 and 422 California Street respectively, the Merchants Exchange Bank had its headquarters at 423 California, and the Bank of San Francisco operated nearby at 436 California Street.
