Overview
D.E. Callahan operated the Double Eagle Hotel at the corner of K and 7th Streets in Sacramento, CA, in 1868. At this time, there were a cluster of lodging places near this address, including the Capital Hotel at the same intersection and rented rooms in the basement of the Masonic Hall, one block away at 6th and K Streets. (See Double Eagle Hotel adverstisement, Sacramento Daily Union, vol. 35, no. 5372, 06/15/1868, p. 4.) A "double eagle" was a slang term for a $20 gold piece that featured an eagle on one side.
