Serra House has occupied three sites, the last since 2006.

Overview

This was the second house on the Stanford University Campus for its first President, David Starr Jordan (1851-1931), and his second wife, Jessie Knight Jordan (1866-1952). This residence, originally located at 330 Serra Street, next to their earlier residence, Xasmin House, was used by David Starr Jordan until his death in 1931, and by Jessie Knight Jordan until hers in 1952. Serra House has been moved twice, first, in 1983 to 556 Salvatierra Walk (known as "The Row,") and in 2006 to 589 Capistrano Way. In these various locations, the Mathematical Economics Department, Institute for Math Studies and Social Sciences, Department of Computer Science, and the Center for Research on Women (CROW). CROW moved into Serra House from Polya Hall in the summer of 1979 and remained here until 1986. The Institute for Research on Women and Gender occupied Serra Hall from 1986 until 2006, until it was renamed the Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research. The Clayman Center continued to use the much-renovated Serra Hall in 2016.
