Building Notes
In 1874, the Bank of San Jose Building #1 provided office space for five legal firms. They included that of Charles E. Allen, who occupied Room #2, District Attorney Thomas Bodley, in Room #10, Spencer and Rankin (F.E. Spencer and B.P. Rankin), in Rooms #2 and 3, C.C. Stephens, in Room #17, and George M. and James Alexander Yoell, in Rooms #4 and 5.(See San Jose, California, City Directory, 1874, pp. 124-125.) The prime business blocks housing attorneys in 1874 were the Knox Building (with 9 legal firms), Bank of San Jose Building #1 (5 firms), McLaughlin and Ryland's Building (4 firms), and the 312 1st Street Building (2 firms).
