Originally built as a courtyard in front of the Claire Trevor School of the Arts in the 1960s, re-construction on this 30,000 square-foot plaza began in 07/2004; it's cost was said to have been approximately $3.6, most of which came from private sources; the plaza will feature a 200-person ampitheatre, a "water table" sculpture, plasma screen television monitors featuring art, video, dance and drama, and a new landscape design; Maya Lin and UC Irvine Chancellor, Michael V. Drake, presided over the dedication of the Arts Plaza on 10/25/2005. According to a University of California News Release, "The Arts Plaza is the final component of the school's renovation funded by a capital campaign that began in the late 1990s. This effort has renovated Winifred Smith Hall, converted the Village Theatre into the Claire Trevor Theatre, and established the Beall Center for Art and Technology, and Cyber Cafe. Newport Beach residents and longtime UCI supporters Marilyn and Thomas Nielsen led the fundraising for the Arts Plaza."
