Overview
Designed by the Dayton, OH, architect Albert Pretzinger, the Ohio State building was inspired by the Ohio State Capitol, sans its lantern, in Columbus. A group of five architects designed and built the Neo-Classical Ohio State Capitol Building between 1839 and its completion in 1861. It was clad in indigenous limestone obtained from quarries on the Scioto River's west banks. The Ohio State Building at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition had a consistent, three-bay composition of the original, but with pediments along the parapets of the outside bays. The pediment of the Ohio State Building also displayed more ornamentation, with a row of acroteria gracing its roofline. The two outside bays of both buildings featured colonnades of Doric pilasters, while the central bays of both featured colonnades of columns topped by Doric capitals.
Alteration
Members of the Peninsula Country Club admired the PPIE Ohio State Building so much that they bought it for $1,000 at auction and had it shipped by barge through San Francisco Bay to a new shoreline location in San Carlos, CA. The move occurred in 08/1916.
