The Metropolitan Theatre #1 stood on Montgomery Street near Jackson Street in 1857.

Overview

Opening in the fall of 1853, the Metropolitan Theatre #1 was one of three theatres, in addition to the American and San Francisco, operating in Gold Rush San Francisco that sought to bring higher-class theatre and music to the booming city.

Building Notes

The noted actress Catherine Norton Sinclair (1817-1891) managed the Metropolitan Theatre #1 when it opened in 12/1853. (See JoAnne Levy, They Saw the Elephant: Women in the California Gold Rush, (Hamden, CT: Archon Books, 2006), p. 142.) Three years later, Benjamin A. Baker managed the Metropolitan #1.
