Bard, began to develop a chain of movie theatres in Southern California, the Bard's Hill Street Theatre being the first; Bard did not show first-run films, but chose less-expensive recent releases; subsequently, it became known as the Towne Theatre in the 1930s and the Pussycat in the 1960s, part of a larger chain venues exhibiting pornographic movies;
