Overview
The Modern Hebrew School opened at the corner of 18th Avenue and East Fir Street on 09/14/1913. The Seattle Times covered the dedication: "With appropriate ceremonies the new Modern Hebrew School at Eighteenth Avenue and East Fir Street, was dedicated yesterday afternoon. The program included addresses by prominent Jewish citizens and music by the students of the school and a special choir. Five hundred persons attended. The new institution, which will be known as Talmud Torah, will accommodate 120 students. The dedication ceremonies opened with a procession from the Jewish synagogue at Seventeenth Avenue and Yesler Way to the new building." (See "500 Attend Dedication of New Hebrew School," Seattle Times, 09/15/1913, p. 13.) The synagogue at 17th Avenue and Yesler Way was the first building of Congregation Ezra Bessaroth.
