Building History

The Saint Joseph Residence opened in what was a convent. The Providence Archives of Seattle indicated that this elder care facility was built to serve retiring nuns of the Sisters of Providence and other orders: "Saint Joseph Residence opened in 1966 to provide assisted living and skilled nursing care to Sisters of Providence. After the building was completed, retired or ill sisters who had resided at Mount St. Vincent, on the same campus, moved over to Saint Joseph Residence. The Residence now houses nearly as many women religious from other communities (e.g. Edwards and Tacoma Dominicans, Benedictines) as it does Sisters of Providence." (See Providence Archives of Seattle, "Saint Joseph Residence, Seattle, Washington," accesed 01/28/2016.) Like many elder-care housing facilities, the Saint Joseph Residence operated its own infirmary from the beginning.

Alteration

The Saint Joseph Residence underwent a full-scale renovation in 2004. At this time, the building contained four floors; on the main (second) floor, contained an archives, library, suite of guest rooms and private residences for sisters. The floor above included a apartments, skilled nursing facility and chapel, while the fourth held more living units for sisters. Twenty retired sisters occupied the second and fourth floors, while 17 lived on the third level.
