Overview
Professor Joseph LeConte (1823-1901) resided at this address in 1896, along with his wife, Caroline Nisbet (1828-1915), and son, Joseph Nisbet LeConte (1870-1950) who also became a teacher. The elder Joseph LeConte was born in Georgia and fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Disgusted by what he saw in South Carolina where he lived during Reconstruction, he accepted an offer to teach at the new University of California in Berkeley. LeConte became notable in various scholarly areas, but his prime contribution came in geology. His widow continued to live at this address in 1908. (See Oakland City Directory, 1908, p. 1351.)
