Overview
The Studebaker Corporation, following the lead of Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, opened an assembly plant in Southern CA in 1938. At this time, the region had become a big market, and "car culture" was already ingrained in its population. Automobile racing became a popular local sport during the 1910s. Many engine-based manufacturing companies, particularly those in aeronautic engineering and airplane manufacture, opened large-scale facilities in Long Beach and Los Angeles. A strong connection between automobile production operations in Detroit, MI, and Los Angeles began to be established in the 1930s.
