Overview

Erected in 1946, the commercial building at 3665 Stone Way Avenue North has served multiple owners over the years. Between 1958 and 1964, at least, the Golden Rule Bakery and Dairy, Incorporated, operated here. During the 1970s until about 2000, it occupied a neighborhood composed of other construction-related businesses. These businesses flourished on this stretch of road wedged between the Wallingford and Fremont neighborhoods. By the mid-2000s, this commercial usage had given way to residential purposes, as six-story, mixed-use apartment buildings began to line the west and east sides of Stone Way. In 2015, Stoneway Electric remained as one of the last of these building-related businesses on a street filled with highrises. With this wave of apartment building, property values skyrocketed in the vicinty. Stoneway Electric Supplies land and improvements had a taxable value of $2,845,400 in 2014, but jumped to $4,492,300 in 2015. (Property values also escalated greatly between 1998 and 1999--$749,500 to $1,215,600--and 2005 and 2010--$1,797,500 to $2,995,200.) (See King County, iMap, Department of Assessments Property Record for Parcel #8033700100, accessed 10/23/2015.)

Building History

From at least 1958 until 1964, the Golden Rule Bakery and Dairy, Incorporated, founded in 1917, ran its operations in this building. (In the latter year, it also had a plant at 4450 Fremont Avenue North.) Several commercial bakeries operated here and nearby in Wallingford during the mid-20th century. Golden Rule went out of business in 07/1964, citing a deluge of low-cost Canadian bread entering the Seattle market, and due to the diminishing profitability of its bakery's home delivery services. (See "Golden Rule Bakery Out of Business," Seattle Times, 07/13/1964, p. 6.) Its main creditor, the Seattle Association of Credit Men, ordered an auction of Golden Rule's bakery and dairy equipment at this location on 12/01/1964. (See Classified Ad, Seattle Times, 11/29/1964, p. 44.)

Manna Milling Company held an equipment auction on 04/01/1974 following its liquidation at 3665 Stone Way Avenue North. (See Manna Milling Classified Ad, Seattle Times, 03/28/1974, p. E10.)

Stoneway Electric Supply moved into the space in either 03/1974 or 04/1974. (See Stoneway Electrict Supply Advertisement, Seattle Times, 03/21/1974, p. 28.)
