The California Street Cable Railroad had its car barn, powerhouse and offices located on the southwest corner of California Street and Hyde Street.

Overview

This was the second powerhouse utilized by the California Street Cable Railroad, built to serve new lines created in 1890-1891.

Building History

Originally California Street Cable Railroad just traveled 1.7 miles, connecting a terminus points at California and Kearny Streets and California and Fillmore Streets. In 1879, Stanford and his associates extended the line to Presidio Avenue, eight blocks west.
