Overview

The lawyer C. Temple Emmett (1823-1884) erected this house in San Francisco's posh Nob Hill neighborhood across California Street from the residence of Leland and Jane Stanford. (See Oscar T. Shuck, "C. Temple Emmett," History of the Bench and Bar of California, [Los Angeles, CA: Commercial Printing House, 1901] , p. 438-439.) David Porter, an original partner in the California Street cable car line, an amenity that made climbing the steep hill easy, purchased the house from Emmett. (The California Street Cable Railroad opened 04/10/1878, stretching from California Street to Fillmore Street.) James Fair bought the property from Porter, and on it he would erect his renowned Fairmont Hotel, built in 1902, burned in the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 04/18-19/1906, and rebuilt by 1907.

Demolition

The Emmett/Porter House was razed, and the Fairmont Hotel (1902-1907) later occupied its property.
