Fallen Leaf, CA

Overview

In the aftermath of World War II, building supplies were scarce in the US (and abroad) and businesses retooled for the new consumer economy. This Quonset hut vacation house caught the eye of many in the US and elsewhere who dreamed about erecting inexpensive vacation houses on idyllic lakefront settings. In this case, the San Francisco architectural firm, Campbell and Wong, adapted the available military building type for use as a weekend retreat on Fallen Leaf Lake in El Dorado County. The image proved interesting enough for the prestigious Italian journal, Domus, to publish it in its fifth number of 1949. (See "I secondi pionieri," Domus, no. 236, May 1949, p. 1.)
