The architect Loren L. Rand designed the Crescent Building #2 for the department store's owners, Robert B. Paterson and J.M. Comstock.
The Crescent Building #2 is a fine example of a Chicago School Department Store building; it has an austere decorative character, and because its steel framing members could be so thin, very ample window space could be included, allowing daylight to penetrate much of the interior. The use of so-called Chicago windows on the exterior underscored how progressive this building was for its time.
