Architects Loren L. Rand (and John K. Dow had their offices in the Crescent Building in 1889. Rand would design a later Crescent Building (1917-1919) for the Crescent Department Store at 707 West Main Avenue in Spokane, WA. According to the the Illustrated History of Spokane County, State of Washington (1900), written by Jonathan Edwards, "[Hicks] has long been one of the leading contractors and builders of the city, erecting many fine residences and business houses, including the Crescent block, the only brick building which escaped the fire." (See Jonathan Edwards, An Illustrated History of Spokane County, State of Washington, [San Francisco: W.H. Lever, Publisher, 1900], p. 482.)
