Overview

The merchant Harris C. Capwell opened this large-scale department store in Downtown Oakland, CA, in 1912. Like most upscale department stores of its time, the building had many amenities for its shoppers, including a top floor dining room, nursery, and a rooftop deck for sitting. In 1913, Capwell also served as the President of the Security Bank and Trust Company of Oakland. (See thePolk-Husted Company's Oakland, California, City Directory, 1913, p. 204.)
