Architect Lilian Rice (1889-1938) designed her first residence--"a little grey cottage"--for her parents Julius A. and Laura Steele Rice for this site in National City. Her parents had lived in the San Diego since before 1880. Her father had lived in both VT and IL, while her mother had been born in NY and lived in VT. According to Rice biographer, Diane Welch, the Rice House was the "first ever cement home in National City." (See Diane Y. Welch, Lilian J. Rice, Architect of Rancho Santa Fe, California, [Arglen, PA: Schiffer Publishing Company, 2010], p. 12)
